{"id":1301,"date":"2020-07-23T15:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-07-23T22:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sling2.slantalpha.com\/wp\/?p=1301"},"modified":"2021-02-02T17:12:25","modified_gmt":"2021-02-03T01:12:25","slug":"engine-propeller-and-firewall-forward-kit-ordered","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sling2.slantalpha.com\/wp\/?p=1301","title":{"rendered":"Engine, Propeller and Firewall Forward Kit &#8211; Ordered"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I can see the end of the airframe assembly down the road and setting the wheels in motion to have the engine group arriving in 3 months or so, will keep me motivated to accomplish tasks in order to be ready when it all gets here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The engine is the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flyrotax.com\/produkte\/detail\/rotax-912-is-isc-sport-2.html\" target=\"_blank\">BRP Rotax 912iS Sport<\/a>. It&#8217;s state-of-the-art. I&#8217;m absolutely set on having a 21st century engine for a 21st century airplane. It&#8217;s a mere 100 horsepower, but it&#8217;s <em>the<\/em> engine for the Sling 2 &#8211; IMO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"582\" height=\"420\" class=\"wp-image-1302\" style=\"width: 582px;\" src=\"https:\/\/sling2.slantalpha.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Screen-Shot-2021-02-02-at-4.09.35-PM.png\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sling2.slantalpha.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Screen-Shot-2021-02-02-at-4.09.35-PM.png 582w, https:\/\/sling2.slantalpha.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Screen-Shot-2021-02-02-at-4.09.35-PM-300x216.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 582px) 100vw, 582px\" \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, there is a 115 horsepower turbo engine option &#8211; which offers more performance to be sure, but it&#8217;s significantly more money, it&#8217;s got a turbocharger to maintain, not quite as high-tech &#8211; doesn&#8217;t have FADEC (computerized engine management system), plus &#8211; it demands a constant-speed propeller that costs 4 or 5 times as much as the fixed-pitch unit I&#8217;ve decided on for my machine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking of propellers &#8211; the propeller of choice for the 912iS powered Sling 2 happens to be the very sharp-looking, carbon fiber, 70 inch diameter, 3-bladed, ground-adjustable <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/whirlwindpropellers.com\/aircraft\/product\/lsa-s-t-o-l-propellers-ga-rw3b-3-blade\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/whirlwindpropellers.com\/aircraft\/product\/lsa-s-t-o-l-propellers-ga-rw3b-3-blade\/\" target=\"_blank\">Whirlwind GA-RW3B<\/a>, dressed with the perfect spinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"717\" height=\"384\" src=\"https:\/\/sling2.slantalpha.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Whirlwind-Sling-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1303\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sling2.slantalpha.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Whirlwind-Sling-2.png 717w, https:\/\/sling2.slantalpha.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Whirlwind-Sling-2-300x161.png 300w, https:\/\/sling2.slantalpha.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Whirlwind-Sling-2-624x334.png 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 717px) 100vw, 717px\" \/><figcaption>Sling 2 Aircraft Fitted with Whirlwind Composite Propeller<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The engine comes from BRP Rotax in Austria, through their South African distributor &#8211; Sling Aircraft and then to the USA. Eventually, it all has to make its way to the Upper Left Corner, where I am, in out-of-the-way Sequim, Washington. It&#8217;s a roundabout, slow-boat process &#8211; no doubt about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because the engine and aircraft are of African decent &#8211; I&#8217;m expecting the engine fittings are going to be metric, as opposed to UNF &#8211; more typical for aircraft in the US. The engine itself is metric, but I understand that they can be had with UNF fittings for oil and fuel lines. However, the firewall forward kit is going to be for a metric engine and I&#8217;m not going to try to swim upstream. Go with the flow. Someday, if it really bugs me I could probably convert it from metric fittings.
